Petition to Reduce Mosquito Problem

Petition summary and background:

The quality of life for Pefferlaw residents is significantly impacted by attacks from biting mosquitoes and black flies throughout most of the spring and summer.  For much of this too short season, we are unable to fully enjoy sports facilities, parks or even our own backyards.  Restaurants cannot have outdoor patios, and tourists choose other locations where they can enjoy the outdoors.  Many Canadian municipalities have implemented programs to reduce mosquito populations by at least 80% to 95% for the entire season.  The Committee for Mosquito Free Pefferlaw has spoken with representatives of the Gatineau, Quebec program.  They use a safe, environmentally benign; Health Canada approved bacterium, Bti, to control mosquito larvae.

Action petitioned for:

We, the undersigned, are citizens who believe that the ongoing study of mosquito populations will not lead to any action in 2008.  We urge Georgina Council to immediately investigate the existence of comprehensive season long programs elsewhere, and to plan for a one year trial Bti control program in 2008.
